Deputy Prime Minister and head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, has established a PL/AI advisory team that will create recommendations for the use of artificial intelligence to improve specific areas of state activities. One of the group members is Tomasz Czajka, an outstanding programmer who worked, among others, for Elon Musk’s SpaceX. Czajka is also one of the heroes of the famous photo from the “IT specialists’ party”.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is today one of the most important, if not the most important, trends in the world of new technologies. It is therefore not surprising that this area is also in the sphere of interest of the government. As explained by the Ministry of Digitization, the use of artificial intelligence is intended to help increase the efficiency and optimization of processes in public administration. AI is also a chance for economic advancement and a development leap for Poland.

To speed up this process, the head of the Ministry of Digital Affairs, Krzysztof Gawkowski, established an advisory teamwhich is created by specialists from the technology sector.

Today we are initiating a very important project, a group of experts with proven global successes in the field of AI development have declared their support. This group is of course open and we want more participants to join it. I believe that together we can ensure that AI is used to significantly improve the functioning of administration activities that are important for citizens, and consequently to improve the lives of Poles

– said Krzysztof Gawkowski at the conference organized on Monday.

The originator of the PL/AI team is Miron Mironiuk. He is the founder of Comose AI, operating in the largest markets in Asia, which launched a pilot program for teaching programming in primary schools in September last year.

20 years ago, thanks to the invention of electricity, the United States overtook Great Britain as the richest country in the world. Today, thanks to the best engineers, Poland has a chance to take advantage of the artificial intelligence revolution and become 1 of the 10 richest countries in the world by the middle of this century

– noted Miron Mironiuk. – That is why, together with other Polish experts, we decided to offer our knowledge and experience in implementing innovative solutions based on artificial intelligence that have a chance to help Poland make a development leap – he added.

The following people also joined the PL/AI team: Agnieszka Mikołajczyk Bareła, Kamila Staryga, Marek Cygan, Tomasz Czajka, Karol Kurach and Łukasz Kidziński. The result of the work of the group, in which all members work pro bono, is to develop specific proposals for solutions and tools aimed at effectively solving problems in carefully selected areas.

We are programmers and entrepreneurs – we want to work sensibly and see results. We are fully aware that the system is not perfect, so a great challenge will be, for example, the level of digitization and digitization of data – in many sectors of state activity, with courts, offices and health care at the forefront, for AI to be able to help at all, data and documents would first have to be be digitized

– explained Kamila Staryga, co-founder of Rita Health, who in the past worked, among others, for Google X, ATAP and Flo Health.

Tomasz Czajka and the “IT specialists’ party”

During the presentation of the PL/AI team. its members also decided to recreate the now iconic photo from the “IT specialists’ party”. Not without reason. One of the members appointed by Krzysztof Gawkowski is Tomasz Czajka.

Tomasz Czajka is one of the most outstanding Polish programmers. He deals with open source software, algorithms and artificial intelligence methods. He worked on optimizing the infrastructure of computing centers for Google and created navigation and control software for the Crew Dragon manned space vehicle by SpaceX. He is also the ACM ICPC Team Programming World Champion (2003).

However, Czajka gained particular popularity thanks to a photo that went viral on the Polish Internet a few years ago and became an extremely popular meme. In a photo taken during a science camp in Zwardoń in 1997, you can see a programmer (second from the left, without glasses) with three friends in the canteen.

In recent years, Poland has fallen victim to cyberattacks, such as the leak of 50,000 PESEL numbers in 2023, for which the hackers demanded a ransom. Artificial intelligence in the wrong hands will increase the frequency and severity of these attacks. The state must be prepared for this. It is particularly important to ensure children’s safety on the Internet and protect them from the negative impact of artificial intelligence

– said Tomasz Czajka on Monday during the presentation of the PL/AI group.

An AI council has been established. “Why are there no active scientists in it?”

The decision of Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski to establish a group of PL/AI experts was commented on, among others, by: prof. Aleksandra Przegalińska, Polish philosopher, futurologist and expert in the field of artificial intelligence.

In principle, I am glad that the AI Council has been established in Poland under the Minister of Digitization. However, it is not clear why it does not include active scientists, ethicists and lawyers, but only business. It is also not entirely clear why the Council is being established on the initiative of a specific company, Cosmose AI, which operates on the Chinese market.

– Przegalińska wrote on platform – she added.

@KGawkowski has established an advisory team for AI, but the lack of sufficient representation of the world of science and the social side is very surprising. 2 out of 7 people are associated with one company (with strong Chinese connections)!

– said prof. Dariusz Jemielniak, social researcher analyzing disinformation online and anti-science movements, specializing in open cooperation organizations and researching online communities.
