9to5Mac: Apple will disable pulse oximeter on watches sold in the US
Apple will disable the blood oxygen measurement feature on its watches sold in the United States. This was reported by 9to5Mac.
To avoid a ban on the sale of devices, the company will disable the controversial function in smart watches. This became known from lawyers of the company Masimo, because of whose lawsuit sales of Apple Watch in the United States were banned in December 2023. Earlier, the US International Trade Commission (USITC) banned the smartwatch for violating a Masimo patent related to a pulse oximeter.
According to journalists, the popular feature will only be unavailable on watches sold in the United States. For users who purchased gadgets before the ban, the option will work.
Apple later said that the blood oxygen level detection function will work in the brand’s new watches until the US appeals court considers the case.
On December 27, the Federal Court of Appeal suspended the ban on the sale and import of Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. According to experts, the final ban on the sale could be delayed for several months.
