Already 23 million people have opted for a cheaper subscription with ads – , advertising director at the company Amy Reinhard during CES 2024. The idea of Netflix was quite widely criticized, but as you can see, it turned out to be a success. And although it has only been available for a dozen or so months and only in some countries, almost every tenth of Netflix’s 250 million subscribers has chosen a subscription with advertising.
Netflix with ads is an undoubted success
“What excites us the most is the involvement,” Reinhard said. As much as 85 percent subscribers of the ad-supported plan use streaming for two hours a month or more. In addition, the number of people who decide to subscribe to this type of subscription is growing rapidly. Just over two months ago, there were about 15 million of them. In an October letter to shareholders, Netflix estimated that in the 12 countries where the plan is available, about 30 percent new users choose this option.
Netflix with ads is half the price of the cheapest package in the United States – it costs $6.99. per month, while the standard one costs $15.49. In addition to advertisements, the cheaper package has a slightly smaller library of films and series, so if we want to watch all the productions available on the platform, we have to pay more.
For now, the advertising package is not available in Poland. At the beginning of 2024, we still do not know whether a new package will appear.
Netflix is looking for more ways to make money
As part of the subscription, in addition to movies and series, we also get access to games for phones and tablets with and iOS. The list of titles includes several interesting propositions, e.g. classics such as GTA San Andreas and Vice City (which are paid in the Google Play store). Currently, platform subscribers have access to the entire list of games on Netflix Games for free. The games are also free from ads and microtransactions. This may change soon, however. According to reports from “The Wall Street Journal”, Netflix authorities are considering introducing advertising in titles that platform users will receive for free as part of the package. What’s more, some of them would feature micropayments.
