A confusing situation arose at a synagogue in Brooklyn, New York, when police confirmed the existence of a “secret tunnel.”

The incident early this week led to an argument, a confrontation of sorts, that led to the arrest of at least nine people, media including Univisión reported.

Discussion in the synagogue

On one side of the synagogue, as captured in the footage, construction materials and rubble can be seen. To hide the passage, they covered it with white cloth, which attracted attention. The events, Univision News reported, were recorded at the Chabad-Lubavitch synagogue.

Alleged “extremist students” are said to have built the tunnel discovered in the building. When the police arrived, having discovered the passage, they took several people out of the tunnel and tempers flared. The situation became increasingly confusing.

It is an underground tunnel that allowed (or was intended to allow) access to and exit from the synagogue. But after discovering it, they began confrontations that ended in several arrests by New York police, Univision reported, citing the AP agency.

According to Telemundo, the tunnel is 50 feet long, approximately 50 feet. And it would have been built within the last year.

Chabad leaders, the US media added, “declined to say when they discovered the clandestine connection.”

But “several worshipers said news of the tunnel’s existence had spread through the community in recent weeks.”

According to the news channel, the manager sent a construction team to repair the damage to the building, but outbreaks of violence by the ‘extremists’ put the atmosphere under pressure.

The police decided to intervene “because of the disorder and chaos.” There were 9 to 10 arrests. The arrests were “for criminal conduct and criminal trespass.”

Univision said on the 9th of this month that it was not clear why they were building the tunnel. Telemundo has put forward an unconfirmed version.

On social networks, users ask to carefully investigate what that passage was for. “I can’t believe they have that secret room just for prayers, this is weird,” said user @yari500.
