They receive transfers from Apple worth PLN 400. This is not an error. What is it about?

Apple customers from the United States receive transfers from the company in the amount of USD 92.17 (approximately PLN 365). This is the result of a court settlement that the Cupertino company agreed to after the outbreak of “batterygate” – one of the largest scandals in the history of the technology industry.

. It turned out that the Cupertino company intentionally slowed down the operation of older iPhones. This affected the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus and the first generation iPhone SE.

Apple released a patch that lowered the processor clock speed in these devices by half. This, as the company explains, was to minimize the risk of the device suddenly turning off. The problem is that the company did not inform customers about this. When the matter came to light, Apple beat its chest and apologized to customers. One of the elements of the “penance” was the reduction of the price of replacing the iPhone battery from $79 to $29.

However, this did not end the topic. In the USA, a group of dissatisfied customers filed a class action lawsuit against the Cupertino company. The case ended only in 2020, when the technology giant finally agreed to pay injured users (participating in the lawsuit) $500 million in compensation as part of the settlement.

However, no money was paid because not every injured party agreed to an amicable solution. In August 2023, two dissatisfied iPhone owners who opposed the settlement lost their case in the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, allowing the final signature on the three-year-pending settlement.

iPhone users boast about transfers from Apple. It’s a rare sight

Finally, in early 2024, Apple moved from words to deeds. iPhone users have been boasting about transfers received from a company from Cupertino for several days. They amount to USD 92.17, or approximately PLN 365. It is worth noting that both the class action lawsuit and the settlement with Apple concerned customers from the US. People who bought iPhones in Poland must therefore treat it with taste.

“Thank you for providing a budget for pizza this weekend,” wrote one of the X platform users, attaching a screenshot of the transfer from Apple to the message.

“The transfer for #batterygate has arrived! It only took them four years,” wrote another person.

Due to the Batterygate scandal, Apple also had to deal with several other cases in the United States alone. In 2020, the company was sued by, among others, state of California. The Silicon Valley manufacturer did not admit to breaking the law, but agreed to pay a $113 million fine.
