In mid-November 2023, the government allowed us to easily reserve our PESEL number. This step allows you to protect yourself against the effects of identity theft and block the possibility of, for example, a stranger taking out a loan in your name. PESEL can be registered voluntarily by any adult citizen, both online (at mobywatel.gov.pl via Profil Zaufany) and stationary (e.g. at the commune office or post office).
You can now reserve your PESEL number directly from your phone. New option in mObywatel
Now, in addition to the traditional ways of registering PESEL numbers, there is another one, definitely the most convenient. On Thursday, the Ministry of Digitization announced that the function of blocking the PESEL number has now appeared in the government’s mObywatel application. This means that reservations can be made without the need to log in on the computer (using a Trusted Profile, password for online banking or confirming the identity with the application), but only using the biometric security of the mObywatel application.
Along with the ability to reserve the PESEL number, the application also includes the option to withdraw the reservation, view the history of activities (when the PESEL number was reserved and when it was not) and check who and when checked our PESEL number.

Thanks to it: you will reserve your PESEL number, withdraw the restriction, find out who checked your PESEL number, see when your PESEL number was restricted and when it was not. It is worth remembering that blocking your PESEL number may cause some problems in the future. We will have to remember, for example, before taking out a loan or making purchases in installments, to unblock the number well in advance (fortunately, this can be done immediately, for example with the help of mObywatel). The holder of a restricted PESEL number may also have problems with withdrawing larger amounts of money from the bank if he does not withdraw the restriction on time.
For now, the mObywatela function will not provide full protection
You should also be aware that although we can now reserve our PESEL number, this is still not a step that will make us 100 percent. safe. The register of restricted numbers is starting to operate now, but for some time – as part of the first stage of system implementation – banks and loan companies will not be able to check whether a given PESEL number is on the list. Moreover, even from June, the possibility of blocking numbers will not completely eliminate the risk of identity theft.
The register starts operating on November 17, but banks, loan companies, telecommunications operators and notaries will be obliged to check whether their client’s PESEL is not restricted only from June 1, 2024. Now not only do they not have to do this, but they do not even have the technical possibility to do so. The integration of IT systems is only just beginning
