The first comet, 12P/Pons-Brooks, is about three times the size of Mount Everest and has an icy volcano on its surface. It is a periodic comet belonging to the Halley-type comet family. “We will see it in spring,” says Jerzy Rafalski from the Planetarium in ToruĊ. According to calculations, it should be best visible on April 21. “It may not be the brightest, but those who have binoculars will soon be able to look for it in the sky,” said Jerzy Rafalski.
in the December 8 entry devoted to the object, it is sometimes called the “devil’s comet”. This happens because a volcano on its surface periodically ejects ice and gas, causing the comet to hurtle through space surrounded by a halo that looks like horns in close-ups. According to NASA, despite the terrifying name, the object does not pose a threat to our planet. The comet was named after the two astronomers who discovered it. First, on July 21, 1812, it was done by Jean-Louis Pons, and then, on September 2, 1883, by William Robert Brooks.
Comets over Poland in 2024. One will visit us only once, but it can be visible to the naked eye
The next comet will appear in the fall. Tsuchinshan-ATLAS is probably a comet that will appear only once near Earth. It will be closest to our planet on October 12 and for the next several days it should be clearly visible in the northern hemisphere, including Poland. “Predictions show that it can be visible even to the naked eye. This is what astronomers and night sky lovers are waiting for, let there finally be a comet that will be visible from the center of the illuminated city,” said Jerzy Rafalski.
The year 2024 also brings other interesting astronomical phenomena. This includes a total solar eclipse that will be visible on April 8, but only from North America. We have to wait until March next year for a partial solar eclipse visible from Poland, and until 2075 for an annular eclipse.
The year 2024 will also be special for Polish astronomy. In the fall, the space flight of the second Pole in history is planned, who will carry out experiments developed by Polish scientists and engineers on board the International Space Station.
