Canalys: 240 million PCs will become obsolete due to incompatibility with Windows 11

Canalys specialists assessed Microsoft’s refusal to provide free support for Windows 10. This was reported in a study on the company’s website.

On October 14, 2025, Microsoft will stop releasing free updates for Windows 10. According to Canalys experts, this will force a huge number of users to abandon their current computers, since they cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. Because of this, according to the report’s authors, about 240 million PCs will end up in landfill.

Experts noted that if a quarter of a billion outdated computers were stacked, it would be 600 kilometers high and would make it easy to reach the Moon. The material says that Microsoft must reconsider its priorities to prevent the increase in electronic waste.

“OEMs must build durability, repairability, and recyclability into the design of their devices, and OS vendors must ensure that these devices are usable and secure for as long as possible,” Canalys analysts concluded. According to experts, there is currently no law in the market that would force a manufacturer to support their product for a certain period of time.

In early December, Microsoft announced that after support for Windows 10 ends in October 2025, it will offer users paid upgrades. In this case, the OS will be relevant for another three years.
