The UN Security Council postponed again this Thursday the vote on a resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas, diplomatic sources said.
The postponement until Friday came even as the United States, which had opposed several proposals during the drafting of the resolution, He said he was prepared to support it in its current form.
After days of delays, the latest version of the concept has been seen by the AFPcalls for “urgent measures to immediately allow safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid, as well as to create the conditions for a lasting cessation of hostilities.”
He does not call for an immediate end to the fighting.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Washington’s ambassador to the UN, told reporters that “if the resolution is presented as it is, we can support it.”
He denied that the draft resolution had been watered down.
“The draft resolution is very solidhe claimed. “It has the full support of the Arab group.”
The diplomatic disputes at United Nations headquarters in Manhattan, which have caused the vote to be postponed several times this week, have taken place against the backdrop of a deteriorating situation in Gaza and a rising number of fatalities.
The United Arab Emirates supports the resolution on the conflict, which has been amended in several key points to ensure compromiseaccording to the design seen by the AFP.
It demands that all parties “allow and facilitate the use of all (…) routes into and through the entire Gaza Strip, including border crossings (…) for the delivery of humanitarian assistance.”
Israel bombed a newly reopened aid station on Thursday, according to Hamas authorities.
Members of the Council, consisting of fifteen states, have been trying for days to reach an agreement on the resolution.
Israel, backed by its ally the United States, has resisted the term “armistice.” For its part, Washington has used its veto twice to thwart resolutions that Israel had opposed since the start of the war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Wednesday that there will be no ceasefire in Gaza until the “elimination” of Hamas.
Hamas infiltrated Israel on October 7 and killed about 1,140 people, mostly civiliansaccording to a report from the AFP based on Israeli figures.
Israel responded with a brutal air and ground campaign.
The Hamas government’s news agency in the Gaza Strip said on Wednesday that at least 20,000 people had been killed. (JO)
