Sony officially started selling PlayStation 5 consoles in November 2020. In the first months – due to the pandemic – the company was struggling with huge supply problems, as a result of which it was almost impossible to get your own copy of the PS5 (at a normal price).
PlayStation 5 is selling very well. But it fell short of the record
There have been no such problems for a long time, which resulted in fantastic sales results of the current generation of consoles from the Japanese manufacturer. As Sony has just announced, on December 9 this year. PS5 sales exceeded 50 million units. The console thus outclassed its main competitor.
According to Ampere’s estimates quoted by the Financial Times, this year alone Sony sold 22.5 million PS5 units, which is an increase of approximately 65%. Sales of Xbox X/S consoles this year amounted to 7.6 million units, i.e. approx. 15 percent. than a year earlier. For comparison, Nintendo Switch, whose successor we should expect soon, still sells much better than Xbox (16.4 million, a drop of 18%).
Sony’s data shows that PS5 needed 161 weeks to reach the barrier of 50 million units. Interestingly, he came close to matching the result set by his predecessor. PlayStation 4 sold 50 million copies in 160 weeks, which is 7 days faster. The result would probably be much better if it were not for the huge supply problems at the beginning of sales.
The manufacturer also revealed that since its debut in 2013, it has sold over 117 million copies of PlayStation 4. This is a fantastic, but not record-breaking result. This one belongs to the PlayStation 2 console from 2000, which was purchased over 155 million times throughout its sales period.
