participants of the 3400-3800 band auction received reservation decisions for the auctioned blocks from UKE. Telecoms have 14 days to pay the fees, but they can now use the acquired frequencies and start preparations for launching the transmitters.
As part of its settlement, the four participating operators each received one block of the C band with a width of 100 Mhz. The state budget will receive PLN 1.9 billion from this.
The frequencies were distributed as follows:
- Block A: Polkomtel sp. z o. o., price PLN 450,000,000,
- Block B: P4 sp. z o. o., price PLN 487,095,000,
- Block C: Orange Polska SA, price PLN 487,095,000,
- Block D: T-Mobile Polska SA price PLN 496,837,000.
“Real 5G” is coming. The Internet has sped up significantly
The end of the campaign and the issuance of reservation decisions means that Polish operators will soon be able to offer their customers real 5G, because the network we can use today is only a substitute.
Reason? So far, only Polkomtel (Plus) allowed customers to use 5G on a dedicated 2.6 GHz frequency block. The remaining telecoms, i.e. T-Mobile, Orange and P4 (Play) offer 5G on the 2.1 Ghz band, which is shared with the LTE network, which obviously translates into limited network bandwidth.
Now this will finally change, which – in most cases – should translate into much faster data transfer. When exactly will telecoms offer us “real 5G”? Theoretically, this could happen before the end of the year, but this is an unlikely scenario. Before launching new transmitters, operators must obtain appropriate radio permits.
Nevertheless, the first telecom, T-Mobile, has already launched an advertising campaign announcing the launch of 5G transmitters. It was accompanied by the slogan #pedzinowe.
The 5G soap opera is over. We’ve been waiting for this for years
The 5G frequency auction in Poland has such a long and twisted history that even fans of Brazilian soap operas would have difficulty keeping up with it. Let us recall that the Office of Electronic Communications launched the auction in March 2020, but then the plans were thwarted by the coronavirus pandemic, which led to its cancellation.
Later, there were a number of twists and turns that a book could be written about (and it will probably be written in the end). Finally, on June 22 this year. the president of UKE, Jacek Oko, announced the start of the 5G auction, which was supposed to allow “elimination of white internet spots” on the map of Poland. It lasted extremely short because it was resolved in October.
5G means faster mobile internet
5G is the fifth generation of the mobile network. Thanks to it, data transfer and, consequently, the speed of mobile Internet will be significantly increased. Compared to the 4G network, it is less reliable. Although no studies have shown it to be harmful to human health, its introduction is associated with considerable criticism and concerns from some people and groups.
The first commercial 5G network was made available in early 2019 in South Korea. A year later, it also appeared in Poland, but it has still not yet achieved its full potential – primarily due to the failure to provide dedicated 5G frequencies and the prolonged UKE auction.
