9to5Mac: Sales of the new Apple Watch in the US were banned due to patent violations
American sales of the new Apple Watch smartwatch have been banned. This was reported by 9to5Mac.
The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has banned Apple from selling smartwatches due to a lost patent dispute with Masimo. The dispute stemmed from patents related to technology for detecting blood oxygen saturation levels.
It is noted that US President Joe Biden can veto the decision before December 25, but this has not happened yet. Thus, starting December 25, the export of Apple Watch 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 to the country will be prohibited.
The company said that sales of watches on the Apple website will stop on December 21. The devices will no longer be available in retail stores on December 24th. However, there will be no restrictions for devices already sold before this date.
Bloomberg sources later reported that Apple intends to circumvent the ban by disabling the function of determining blood oxygen levels in the watch at the software level. Masimo said the move would not be enough to lift the ban.
At the end of October, French authorities allowed Apple to resume sales of the iPhone 12 throughout the country. In mid-September, sales of the devices were banned due to increased levels of dangerous radiation.
