Recently, we have repeatedly warned against new phishing campaigns and fraudsters sending SMS messages. This time the situation is completely different. If you received a message from the number 798 030 846, not only is it not a scam, but its content may even help you recover your lost money.
Text messages from this number are sent by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź and the Central Office for Combating Cybercrime and concern proceedings regarding investment fraud on online brokerage platforms. The content of such an SMS is as follows:
The Management Board of the Central Office for Combating Cybercrime in Łódź is conducting an investigation into investment fraud on online platforms, supervised by the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Łódź.
Your number was revealed on the list of calls made by a criminal group.
In case of payment of funds for an investment, please provide details of the loss of funds to the e-mail address: nazwa.inwestycyjne@cbzc.policja.gov.pl
Dishonest online brokers. The prosecutor’s office is looking for potential victims
The proceedings conducted by the prosecutor’s office concern the activities of six investment platforms: RoyalZysk, Topeu, Primeu, Kraj Maklerów, Masl and Be22 and concern the suspicion of an offense under Art. 258§1 Penal Code et al. (this article concerns the activities of organized criminal groups – ed.).
As CBZC informs on its website, the practice involved posting a number of announcements on the Internet regarding investment opportunities and achieving high and quick profits. Victims who deposited funds had accounts opened on the websites of fake stock exchanges, where they saw supposedly growing profits.
The victims were asked to install software (AnyDesk) on their computers or smartphones, enabling remote access to their devices and performing remotely unauthorized operations involving a financial burden (e.g. concluding remotely credit agreements, loans, making money transfers).
Attempts by the victim to withdraw the accumulated funds, of course, ended in failure. The information about profits was fictitious and aimed only at gaining the trust of the injured party and persuading him to make further investments.
The prosecutor’s office and CBZC are now looking for potential victims of this fraud. Therefore, they send text messages from the number 798 030 846 to people identified as those who invested money in fake investment activities.
Persons who received the messages in question are asked to contact the Management Board in Łódź of the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime as soon as possible via the following e-mail address: rekrutacja.inwestycyjne@cbzc.policja.gov.pl
– CBZC appeals.
Importantly, the Bureau also takes into account the fact that fraudsters may actually attempt to impersonate this information campaign – therefore it recommends caution and asks for careful verification of the e-mail address in the received message. SMS messages sent by CBZC will not contain any links redirecting to other websites.
