Google has prepared its annual summary of the last (less than) 12 months. As the American giant’s search engine enjoys enormous popularity in Poland, the company’s data tells us a lot about what Poles lived in 2023.
2023 in the Google search engine. Internet dominated by elections
This year’s ranking was dominated primarily by elections. Out of the first ten slogans in 2023, three are related to the elections. The absolute most frequently searched term of the entire year turned out to be “Election results 2023”. The slogan “Parliamentary Elections” took second place, and “PKW” was on the last step of the podium.
Only in the next places do we see topics unrelated to politics in Poland. Two famous films were released (“Oppenheimer” and “Barbie”), and we also devoted a lot of attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the death of two actors and an American singer. The full list of the most popular terms in Google in 2023 is as follows:

“Is Israel in NATO” and “Where is Ziobro”. What else did Poles live in 2023?
Google also prepared a list of winning slogans in several categories. And so the list of “Topics that were talked about” opens with… parliamentary elections again (the slogan “Election 2023”). Poles were also interested in the conflict in Israel, Legionella, sport (FIFA Women’s World Cup), the loud pre-election debate on TVP, the disastrous earthquake in Turkey, the new king of Great Britain, and even space (the Indian mission Chandrayaan-3 ended with a landing on the Moon).
Internet users also often entered side phrases. For example, in the context of the conflict in Israel, they wondered what Hamas was, whether Israel was in NATO or where Palestine was located. Google also separately released a list of ten election-related slogans, including: Lamplighter Wyboczy and two parties – Confederation and Civic Coalition.

Interestingly, there are many Polish productions on the list of the most frequently searched films and series. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the first places in both categories were taken by titles from overseas. In the Film category, the winner was the story of the father of the American atomic bomb, “Oppenheimer”. “Barbie” took second place, and “Zielona granica” took third place. The podium in the Series category is occupied only by American productions – “Wednesday”, “The Last of Us” and “Ginny & Georgie”.

There was also no shortage of surprising, strange or funny slogans in 2023. Very often we checked “how much does…” a lumberjack, a camel, copper and iPhone 15 cost, “how much…” is the penalty for killing a mosquito, how old is Pamela Andérson and how old is a dog and “what is…” implosion, Hamas and annihilation. We also wondered “how…” to vote, extend the Trusted Profile, what the voting card looks like or “why…” not to take part in the referendum, Shopee is closing and there is no fuel.
We also often asked about the Gaza Strip, PPK, the Speaker of the Sejm, the Senate, Iga Świątek and Poland regaining Independence. Moreover, Poles were wondering “Where is Ziobro”, although the Polish politician lost in the “where is…” category to Lukashenko and Liverpool.
