The elected president of Argentina, Javier Mileireceived on Friday at former president of Brazil, the far-right Jair Bolsonaro, who will attend the transfer of power on December 10.
“It was a conversation between friends,” he said. Bolsonaro to journalists as they left the meeting. “He gave me a portrait of what Argentina is like (…). “He is well aware of the responsibility he has given for the situation his country finds itself in.”

“He hopes, with the team he is building, to find the turning point that will allow Argentina to become an economically recognized country in the world,” he added. Milei will be sworn in before the Argentine Congress on Sunday and will receive presidential attributes from his predecessor, Alberto Fernández.
Bolsonaro was one of the most enthusiastic international endorsements given to Argentina’s far right during the protracted election campaign that culminated in his victory over Peronist Sergio Massa in the Nov. 19 runoff. “I have no opinion,” he replied when asked by the press about President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s absence from the events. “Lula traitor, his place is prison!”, a group accompanying the former president sang at the same time.

Lula, who was treated as ‘corrupt’ by Milei during the election campaign, gave up attending the presidential handover and sent Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira as an official representative. Other far-right leaders invited by Milei to the events include Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the leader of Spain’s Vox party, Santiago Abascal.
Bolsonaro, who traveled to Argentina along with 50 Brazilian governors, lawmakers and allied political leaders, arrived at the meeting with Milei after walking along the central pedestrianized Florida Street. “The world is very divided between left and right. I’m a bit radical in that regard. They are not opponents, they are enemies,” he had previously told Radio Miter. (JO)
