Looking ahead to the approaching end of the year, the pair of payments that millions of people will receive from the United States Social Security Administration (SSA) have already been announced: the last in 2023 and one in January “anticipated by the holidays.”

Diario Las Américas points out that more than 70 million people receive monthly checks from Social Security to meet their needs. The beneficiaries are retirees and disabled people from various social programs.

Who receives both payments in the United States

There will be approximately “7.5 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) beneficiaries who will receive two payments in December 2023.”

The first should already have been in force and corresponds to the current month, the aforementioned media explain. The second is scheduled for December 29, 2023.

About this second payment, they said that “Monday, January 1, 2024 will be brought forward due to the end-of-year festivities,” so that people will receive their payment on time without any problems.

Will there be an increase in payments?

An increase will be reflected in the second payment. The Social Security Administration “announced an increase in the cost of living adjustment (COLA) to 32% by 2024, based on demand and high inflation.”

According to information provided by the agency, “SSI payments will increase from $914 to $943 per month per individual in 2024, while for couples they will increase from $1,371 to $1,415 per month.”

SSI payment transmissions

SSI payments are sent “via direct deposit to beneficiaries who have a bank account on file with the SSA, the Direct Express debit card program, or by check sent through the mail.”

Diario Las Américas reported that the SSA will similarly send “payments with an average of $1,827 for retirees over 62” in December.

They explain that those who are retired, over the age of 67, “will be able to receive the maximum benefit of $3,822 dollars per month, which is not dependent on COLA.”

These payments “depend on the beneficiary’s wages during his or her time as a U.S. worker, years worked, retirement age, and other factors such as payment of Social Security taxes.”

How do they pay? By date of birth:

Born between December 1 and 10: you will receive your benefit on December 13.

Born between December 11 and 20: they are paid out on December 20.

Born between December 21 and 31: you have to wait until December 27.
