A shooting took place at a school in Bryansk, southwestern Russia, on Thursday morning. A 14-year-old teenager opened fire inside the facility, killing a classmate and wounding five others before killing himself.

“A 14-year-old girl came to school with a shotgun, which she used to shoot her classmates,” the Russian Investigative Committee said.

“As a result, two people were killed, one of them the attacker, and five were injured,” this organization added in its statement.

According to authorities, the deceased was a classmate from her high school in a suburb of the city of Bryansk.

“The motives behind the crime and all the circumstances are being clarified,” said the commission charged with investigating serious crimes.

The injured were taken to medical facilities.

Alexander Bogomaz, the regional governor of Bryansk, said the five students were at the center. Two were slightly injured, the other three had moderate injuries.

“My sincere condolences to the parents of the girl who was murdered by the perpetrator of the shooting. It is an irreplaceable loss. The families of the murdered young woman and the injured will receive all the help they need,” Bogomaz said.

According to state agency Tass, the author’s father is being questioned by investigators. These “are trying to know how the gun was kept at home, how the girl could have gotten it and whether (the father) taught the young woman how to shoot,” a security forces source told Tass.

Once highly unusual, fatal shootings have become increasingly common in Russia in recent years. In response, authorities tightened gun ownership laws, which were already highly restrictive. (JO)
