Katowice officers of the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime managed to reach a group of criminals who used online advertising portals to deceive customers interested in purchasing a car.
CBZC caught four fraudsters offering cars online. They allegedly extorted PLN 1.6 million
Like , group members bought a legally operating company and cooperated with the so-called poles who set up sole proprietorships. Using these companies, fraudsters then placed offers for car sales on online sales portals. The suspects created realistic-looking ads with photos of real cars. These photographs were stolen from foreign sales portals from various European Union countries.
The fraudsters charged those interested in purchasing an advance payment and promised to import and deliver the car to the address indicated by the customer within 30 business days. After this period, contact with the “sellers” ceased, and customers were left without a car and without a down payment.
CBZC officers managed to find and search the cybercriminals’ hideouts. In total, nine places were searched in four voivodeships in Poland and four people were detained and interrogated. The court issued a temporary arrest order against three of them. The police suspect that the group members managed to extort a total of PLN 1.6 million. They are also suspected of money laundering. Now they face up to 10 years in prison.
