The rates for parliamentarians are really attractive. MPs have just been given the opportunity to buy used equipment at prices lower than during “warehouse airings”, reports “Rzeczpospolita”. According to the Sejm Information Center, 240 MPs have so far decided to purchase used devices.
PLN 500 for a used iPod
“In the case of parliamentary tablets, the valuation is around PLN 500 each,” CIS informs. A similar practice was used four years ago. At that time, the devices were valued between PLN 350 and 500, and 414 out of 460 MPs decided to buy the equipment. What is the reason for such low prices? Unofficially, the idea is for as many MPs as possible to buy them, which will reduce the costs of iPad disposal, because the Sejm buys new devices at the beginning of each term. For example, this year, elected MPs received tenth-generation silver iPads – equipped with a 10.9-inch display, 256 GB of memory and the ability to connect to the 5G network. The Chancellery of the Sejm bought a total of 600 of them and paid PLN 2.7 million for them. According to the Chancellery of the Sejm, there is always a risk that, for example, a professional company may recover deleted data from a MP’s tablet, which is why devices are destroyed after each term. Before that, however, MPs are offered the opportunity to purchase previously used equipment at a bargain price.
“Let’s not pretend. The equipment was also used for private purposes”
Jarosław Urbaniak from KO, head of the Rules, Deputies’ Affairs and Immunities Committee, says in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita” that he himself bought the iPad because the PLN 500 is worth not only the equipment itself, but also the protection of the information contained on it. – MPs are a specific professional group that should be safe – he adds. Michał Gramatyka from Poland 2050 adds that we should not “do magic”, because many MPs also used tablets simply for private purposes.
The tender for parliamentary tablets was first carried out in 2012 and the aim was primarily to improve the delivery of parliamentary forms to MPs. The move away from printing on paper was brought about by: Chancellery of the Sejm savings of half a million zlotys per year.
