Unofficially: the creators of ChatGPT were to warn the supervisory board. We are talking about a “threat to humanity”

Several scientists from OpenAI allegedly sent a letter to the supervisory board warning against artificial intelligence – Reuters reports, citing two informants from the company. This was allegedly one of the reasons why its general director, Sam Altman, was fired from the organization.

The letter to the supervisory board is intended to inform about a breakthrough that could even pose a threat to humanity. on unofficial information obtained from two people working at OpenAI (the company responsible for ChatGPT). However, he emphasizes that neither journalists read the letter nor were they able to verify its authenticity.

A mysterious letter to the OpenAI supervisory board. It was supposed to inform about threats

As the agency writes, scientists working for OpenAI were supposed to make a breakthrough in work on the mysterious Q* project. This would lead to the creation of the first so-called general artificial intelligence (AGI). This is a hypothetical AI that could equal the capabilities of the human brain, performing actions that have so far been impossible without human intervention. Some believe that AGI could not only constantly learn, but also understand what actions it performs, gaining a degree of self-awareness.

Scientists concerned about this fact were to send a letter to the supervisory board, informing them what AGI is and what threats it may pose. The exact content of the letter is not known, but some researchers have long believed that a hypothetical such advanced artificial intelligence could in the future stop listening to its creators and even decide that the extinction of humanity is in its interest. Although it could also provide invaluable help to people, for example by conducting innovative scientific research.

According to sources, the letter was received by the board of directors exactly one day before the sudden dismissal of Sam Altman, OpenAI co-founder and CEO. Along with Altman, Greg Brockman, another co-founder and technology director of OpenAI, who had been demoted a few hours earlier, also left the company and decided to leave the company. Reuters sources say the content of the letter may have been one of the reasons for firing Altman and demoting Brockman.

OpenAI has not officially confirmed the authenticity of the letter, but apparently (as reported by Reuters sources in the company) the existence of the Q* project and the letter itself were confirmed to employees in internal conversations, without revealing the content of the letter. An OpenAI spokesman told Reuters that Mira Murati (Altman’s deputy and chief technology officer) alerted employees to certain media reports without commenting on their veracity. OpenAI officials declined to comment further to Reuters, and the likely authors of the letter did not respond to a request.

A big coup in OpenAI. Altman returned, the supervisory board was dismissed

that Altman and Brockman “along with their associates” are joining Microsoft. After leaving OpenAI, both men were to jointly lead a new research team working on “advanced artificial intelligence”. Upon learning of this, the supervisory board does not reinstate both co-founders.

that Sam Altman is returning to his position. The organization’s authorities reached an agreement and decided to reappoint Altman as general director, and the composition of the supervisory board was changed. Greg Brockman returned to work at OpenAI with Altman.
