Kilitch Healthcare India Limited recently recalled 27 brands eye drops which were distributed in the United States because they presented a series of health and production problems.

According to the AP, inspectors from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found barefoot workers, cracked floors and altered data at the factory.

The recently presented report by the FDA states that the inspection conducted at the factory in Mumbai, India, found that they manufactured 27 brands of eye drops that were subject to a safety alert from the same agency last month, which warned that “in patients receiving these products there is a potential risk of eye infections or related harm.”

The Indian company does voluntarily withdraw products found in batches within the expiration period with expiration dates ranging from November 2023 to September 2025.

New details of inspection at Mumbai factory

Among the new details that emerged, inspectors documented that workers at those factories were not wearing masks, gloves or gowns and that they worked barefoot in areas that should theoretically be sterile. One manager told FDA officials that “this is their standard practice,” the report said.

At other locations, FDA inspectors noted cracked floors and found water stains and peeling paint on walls and ceilings.

The FDA is asking consumers, distributors and retailers who have withdrawn any of the products from the market to suspend their distribution and consumption. Consumers can return them to the place where they purchased them.
