He was the first to announce the case, alerted by one of his readers, who found an e-mail sent by the network’s technical team. The company has already confirmed that it has indeed become “the target of cybercriminal activity”.
Data was encrypted, ransom demanded
Little is known about the attack itself. The chain of stores most likely fell victim to the ransomware malware called Hive. The malware was supposed to block at least some of the data on the company’s servers. This, in turn, means the risk of information on Media Markt’s employees and clients leaking into the hands of cybercriminals, although it is not yet known whether this actually happened.
According to information from another reader, the group behind the attack has already demanded a ransom of $ 240 million (in exchange for unlocking the data). Niebezpiecznik.pl adds, however, that the amount seems far too high, so it may only be the beginning of “negotiations”. Usually, the real ransom value in the case of cyber attacks is around a few or several million dollars.
It is worth adding that sales both in brick-and-mortar stores and on the Internet go smoothly. However, the network emphasizes that in the case of the former, “access to some services may be limited at present” (eg the ability to check whether the product is available in a given store). The company is already working on restoring the damage caused by the attack and resolving the matter.
As Danger advises, Media Markt’s customers have no reason to panic. However, if you’ve used the same password for different accounts on the network (including your Media Markt account), it’s a good idea to change your passwords. We advise you to always set a different password for each account.
Below we quote the full content of the comment that Polish Media Markt sent to Niebezpiecznik.pl:
