The Management Board of Telewizja Polska adopted a resolution on changing the MUX-3 standard for digital terrestrial television to DVB-T2/HEVC. It will take place in two stages. The first one will cover Western Poland on December 14 and 15, and the second one will cover Eastern Poland on December 18 and 19 – they say. MUX-3 includes: TVP1, TVP2, TVP3, TVP Info, TVP Sport and TVP Historia. It is estimated that approximately 500 thousand Poles have still not replaced their TVs and decoders, so after December 19 they will see a black screen on their TVs. It is highly probable that the new government of Donald Tusk may start work in mid-December and some media people believe that the deadline for changing the broadcasting standard has a hidden meaning and the decision of the president of TVP, Mateusz Matyszkowicz, is politically motivated.
“They will say: Tusk took away your television”
Just a few weeks ago, TVP was considering changing broadcasting standards at the end of November, but the television station failed to launch the announced information campaign on this matter. Robert Kwiatkowski, former president of TVP and member of the National Media Council, says directly: this operation can be used politically against PiS opponents “to create the impression of chaos after the democratic opposition parties take power.”
– We have lived to such times that we are looking for a double bottom somewhere, but this may be the bottom. I would never want to assume any ill will, but it is clear that these terms overlap. I can’t imagine that ‘Dziennik Telewizyjny’ was wrongly called ‘Wiadomości’ on December 24 and was run by Mrs. Danuta Holecka. TV Republika will say: Tusk took away your television. To such an extent that he took it over and took away its reach. Such a move may be one of the safeguards that the ruling team has prepared in case of defeat
– adds Marek Rutka, member of the National Media Council.
Expert: Embarrassing chutzpah
Marek Sowa, a media expert, believes that “this is just another clumsy attempt to delay the inevitable changes in the public media.” From his mouth are, among others: words about the “embarrassingly obvious chutzpah of the ruling party officials who were once exposed to the media.”
People who have older TV sets will have to replace their TV set or buy a decoder just before Christmas. Until the end of last year, you could benefit from government funding for the purchase of a decoder in the amount of PLN 100 or for the purchase of a new TV – PLN 250. This year, however, no such co-financing act was adopted.
How to check if your TV supports DVB-T2 – the new terrestrial TV standard?
Owners of new TVs do not have to worry – most of them support DVB-T2. As for older receivers, to use the new standard, it will be necessary to replace the TV or purchase a decoder.
If you want to make sure your hardware allows it, you can do it in two ways:
- enter your TV model into the search engine at www.telewizjanaziemna.pl;
- use the Check TV channel, available on channel 28.
