If you ask opposition politicians planning to take power in Poland what their plans are after the elections, the answer will come down to one common denominator – dispartisanship. Since the takeover of TVP in 2016 by Mateusz Matyszkowicz and then Mateusz Matyszkowicz, Telewizja Polska has been dominated by politicians of one party and one prevailing worldview.
This was especially visible before the last parliamentary elections – TVP consistently did not show public speeches of opposition parties, the main “” editions presented primarily the PiS election program in a positive context and single points of the opposition programs in a negative context. This will change after the elections, and “Wiadomości” will undergo a fundamental change.
Will TVP “Wiadomości” change its name?
The metamorphosis of TVP’s main news program from “Wiadomości” into something else is one of the demands of politicians taking power after the elections. “The TVP Info and “Wiadomości” brands, just like the “Dziennik Telewizyjny” brand after 1989, will be liquidated,” said Cezary Tomczyk at a press conference a month ago. In an interview with Wirtualne Media, the former head of “Wiadomości” and former editor-in-chief of the Directorate of Information Programs of TVP, Sławomir Zieliński. In his opinion, a thorough transformation of “Wiadomości” is necessary, and this also applies to the name of the program. However, it indicates in what order this should be done:
This is absolutely essential. (…) First, you need to have an idea of ”how?”, presenters, publishers, reporters, close what was done and start over. The extent of the destruction and disgust is so great that a simple move – changing the name – will not regain credibility, he says.
What about TVP Info? Big plans here too
The symbolic name change would apply not only to “Wiadomości”, but also to the TVP Info news channel. The former president of TVP, Juliusz Braun, commented on this matter in an interview with Wirtualne Media. There is no doubt that TVP Info should also be transformed into a channel with a different name:
The currently existing TVP Info is a complete contradiction of what is TVP’s statutory obligation. Therefore, an information channel that fulfills the basic obligation of impartiality, pluralism, balance and independence must be built from scratch. It’s not just about changing the faces of the hosts, but a new way of editing. Changing the name would be a clear sign that a new quality is emerging, he said.
