The President of the United States, Joe Bidenwill meet with its Chinese counterpart, Xi JinpingOfficials from both powers confirmed this on Friday on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) in San Francisco.

Our goal will be to try to take steps that will stabilize relations between the United States and China, clarify certain misunderstandings and open new lines of communication.said a senior US official who requested anonymity during an interview with reporters on Thursday. His comments were embargoed until Friday.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry reported that Xi will travel to San Francisco from November 14 to 17 to discuss the “meeting of the heads of state of China and the United States‘as he confirms for the first time his intention to attend the APEC leaders meeting.

This will be the second meeting between the two leaders since Biden took office in January 2021, and their seventh conversation since that date.

It will also be Xi’s first visit to the United States since 2017. San Francisco will also host the APEC summit, which will be held from November 12 to 18.

Biden plans to warn his Chinese counterpart that the Americans “extremely concerned“in light of possible interference by Beijing in the presidential elections of Taiwan in 2024, a senior US official stated.

He estimated that next year, with the Taiwanese elections and November presidential elections in the United States, could be “quite turbulent” for relations between Washington and Beijing.

“TWe are also concerned about the unprecedented, dangerous and provocative escalation of (Chinese) military activities around Taiwan. He added, indicating that Biden will discuss that issue at the summit.

However, he will reiterate to China, which claims sovereignty over the island, that Washington does not support Taiwan’s independence and that US policy in this area has therefore not changed.

Last Friday, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen celebrated the outcome of the meeting she had with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in the context of APEC, describing the dialogues as “honest, direct and productive”.

Yellen stressed the importance of restoring “healthy” economic relations between the United States and China, insisting that “nothing can replace personal diplomacy.”

The secretary announced that she would visit China again in 2024. (JO)
