Switzerland. The euthanasia capsule was legalized. It will enable the terminally ill a dignified departure

In Switzerland, from 2022 it will be legal to use a specially designed Sarco capsule, he says. Regulatory authorities in Switzerland allow terminally ill and suffering people to be allowed a dignified departure. The “dying dignified” capsule is a project by Dr. Philip Nitschke, who has been developing it since 2018. It is to be used for the so-called assisted suicide, which differs from euthanasia in that the person who has obtained consent to do so may be alone at the time of departure, and the final responsibility for the act rests with him (the doctor’s participation is indirect, but the whole procedure takes place in consultation with him / her) ).

Assisted suicide has been legal since 1942. The trial is also legal, incl. in the Netherlands, Belgium, Canada and Luxembourg. In practice, a dignified departure is made possible primarily for people with incurable diseases whose condition worsens. The possibility of using the Sarco capsule is to allow patients to die in a place other than a hospital or center – the capsule can stand almost anywhere and provide – as the designer points out – for example “a view of the Alps”.

The capsule works by pumping nitrogen inside the capsule, which lowers the oxygen content. This leads to unconsciousness and then death.

The capsule can be printed on a 3D printer. Dr. Nitschke estimates that the costs will be from 4,000 to 8,000. dollars – To that should be added the price of nitrogen. The capsule can be placed anywhere.
