Google Maps already uses artificial intelligence to improve travelers’ planning before they leave. In their blog, they recall that at their annual event they announced the development of Immersive View for routes, a completely new way to see every step of your journey, whether you’re driving, walking or cycling.

The novelty presented this week with Immersive View for routes is that its implementation began Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo and Venice for both Android and iOS technology.

‘Suppose you want to cycle across the water to the San Francisco Palace of Fine Arts. Simply request cycling directions, then tap the Immersive View preview to see the route from start to finish in a stunning, multi-dimensional view. You can prepare for each turn as if you were there, with detailed step-by-step visual instructions, and use the timing slider to plan when to turn based on useful information such as simulated traffic and weather conditions. This way you can easily avoid driving during rainy weather or heavy traffic,” the company writes on its blog.

They explained that to achieve Immersive View for places, artificial intelligence is used and is achieved by merging billions of Street View and aerial photos, so that the Internet user can know what a restaurant or a landmark looks like before going there.

To easily understand the environment in this immersive experience, the organization says this has been achieved using Lens in Maps Google Maps, to set the user as soon as they arrive somewhere, for example when leaving a metro station and need to get their bearings or when need to get your bearings, explore a new neighborhood and find the nearest coffee shop.

Lens in Maps (formerly called Live View Search) uses artificial intelligence and augmented reality to aid in that discovery. Simply tap the Lens icon in the search bar and pick up your phone to find information about nearby ATMs, public transport stations, restaurants, cafes and shops.

Google says Lens in Maps is coming to more than 50 new cities starting this week, including Austin, Las Vegas, Rome, São Paulo and Taipei.

During a press conference, Chris Phillips, vice president and general manager of Google’s Geo team, said AI will be an important part of the future development of Google Maps. “We believe we are at an inflection point in this journey to building the future of maps and it being powered by AI,” he said. Google Maps launches the Immersive View tool that allows users to explore 3D maps of 15 cities.

The map simulates the expected weather, lighting and traffic conditions. Have you always wanted to take a walk along the Champs Elysees in Paris? Or maybe check out that new restaurant before you make a reservation? The Google Maps Immersive View tool lets you do all this from your phone. The new AI-powered feature, launching this week, will allow users to explore accurate 3D models of cities and even look inside buildings.

Google first announced the launch of Immersive View last year. But starting this week, for the first time, users can use it for routes in select cities. By choosing the expected time of day, users can explore a multi-dimensional map of the route with expected weather effects, lighting and even traffic forecasts.
