Several people were killed in shootings that took place on Wednesday evening in the state of Maine, in the northeastern United States.while the suspect is still on the run, according to American media, citing police sources.
Lewiston councilor Robert McCarthy told the network cnn that authorities have confirmed “22 deaths and (and) many, many more injuries” in this Maine town, raising the initial death toll to at least ten.
This wave of shootings broke out in a bowling alleyaccording to the chain ABC newswhich also reported shots fired in a bar and in a Walmart distribution center.
Maine State Police identified the alleged attacker on Facebook as Robert Card, 40, and described him as “armed and dangerous.”
The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared a photo of the alleged shooter on Facebook, ask for help identifying it via Messenger or email.
Maine State Police are calling this an “active shooter situation and are asking people to shelter in place.”
“ALERT: There is an active shooting situation in the city of Lewiston,” reads a post on the Maine State Police Facebook page. “Police are asking people to take shelter at the scene. Please stay inside your home with the doors closed. The police are currently investigating at two locations. Again, please stay off the streets and let the police diffuse the situation. If you see suspicious activity or people, call 911. Updates to follow.”
Maine Governor Janet Mills posted on X that she was aware of the situation and urged “all people in the area to follow state and local guidelines. “I will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”
Citing various police sources, cnn reported that at least 50 to 60 people were injured in the incident, but it was not clear how many of them were injured by the gunfire. (JO)
