Brian Mwenda Njagi is a man from Kenya who plays the leading role in a story that passes from mouth to mouth: he pretended that he was a lawyer and got so into the role that – to everyone’s surprise – he won more than twenty lawsuits.

At 28, opinions are divided because of what he has done: “for many he is a ‘brilliant mind’ and for many others he is an ‘identity usurper,’ Antena 3 reported.

His case has sparked great controversy. He deceived easily and knew how to move like fish in water between laws, codes and articles.

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Eric Theuri has taken the situation seriously and said Njagi is facing several cases of forgery and identity theft, Semana noted.

The weight of the law

The fake lawyer was exposed this way: “Brian Mwenda Njagi has applied for a practice agreement through the Kenya Bar Association.”

In addition, Antena 3 indicates, he pretended to be a lawyer who was trained and qualified.

“He used the identity of a real lawyer whose name is very similar to his Brian Mwenda Ntwiga“, he adds.

There the charade fell apart: the Kenya Bar Association contacted Brian Mwenda Ntwiga and he assured that “he had not filed any application.”

Due to these facts, Theuri announced that the fake lawyer “will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, adding that the case will serve as an example for those who wish to follow the same path in the future.”

The 28-year-old man, said La Vanguardia, began to be called ‘the real Mike Ross’ from the series ‘Suits”.

Bail and freedom

Brian Mwenda Njagi was arrested last week after going to the headquarters of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Kenya.

In La Vanguardia, some local media reported that “a Kenyan tycoon was willing to post bail because he was all excited about the story of this 28-year-old fake lawyer.”

According to Semana, the man was released on bail of 100,000 shillings, Kenya’s local currency. “Brian Mwenda Njagi was released after negotiations by his lawyers led by John Khaminwa and former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.”
