Nvidia is already a dominant player in the market of computing chips for artificial intelligence solutions. However, it seems that the company also wants to enter the personal computer industry. And it’s not about graphics cards, but about the area dominated by Intel and AMD.
Reuters: Nvidia is working on its own processor. He wants to threaten Intel
As he learned, Nvidia has started designing its own CPU computing systems for computers running Windows operating systems. The work is being carried out “quietly” for now, writes Reuters, citing information from two sources familiar with the matter.
Interestingly, however, Nvidia’s CPUs – unlike those from Intel (which are produced in an x86-derived architecture) – are to be based on the ARM architecture. This, in turn, may mean that Nvidia is primarily targeting portable computers – laptops and mini PCs. Apple is currently the most successful in this field with its M2 processors, which, however, are only available in this manufacturer’s devices. MacBooks constitute significant competition for Windows ultrabooks, including: thanks to the great M2 processors.
Nvidia would offer similar systems that will be not only extremely efficient, but also very energy-efficient. ARM-based processors also produce less heat, making them better suited for use in small but very powerful computers. As Reuters writes, it is unofficially known that Microsoft would like to see such systems in devices running Windows, which will involve the need to adapt the system to them, but it seems inevitable.
Not only Nvidia. There are already three players
Microsoft was also supposed to have signed a contract with Qualcomm (known mainly for its integrated circuits for smartphones) for the supply of this type of processors for Windows computers. For now, it is an exclusive agreement, but Microsoft is already encouraging other manufacturers to enter the market after the obligation with Qualcomm expires. The Nvidia system currently under development may pose a significant threat to Intel, which does not produce ARM-based systems, but is the world’s largest manufacturer of x86 processors for Windows devices.
Nvidia chips would appear on the market in 2025. At the same time, AMD will also start offering its ARM-based processors, which currently – like Intel – supplies x86 processors for Windows PCs. These two will join Qualcomm, which is expected to release similar-class ARM systems a year earlier. So it seems that the current market leader in computing systems for Windows computers may have a big problem.
