launched an auction (in the 3400-3800 MHz band) in Poland in March 2020. Then the plans were ruined by the pandemic. This year, the auction returned, and on Communicationsman’s Day we saw its results. Four Polish telecommunications operators (P4 (Play network), Polkomtel (Plus network), Orange Polska and ) obtained 15-year reservations for four 100 Mhz blocks in the 3400-3800 Mhz frequency range. The starting price for each block was PLN 450 million. It took 3 days to select the winners, during which 17 rounds took place.
5G for everyone. The long-awaited auction has been concluded
Except for one, the blocks were ultimately auctioned above the starting price. The only one whose price was PLN 450 million was block A (3400-3500 MHz). He was picked up by Polkomtel. Subsequent blocks were more expensive, but also had higher frequencies. Block B (3500-3600 MHz) for PLN 487.095 million went to P4, block C (3600-3700 MHz) for PLN 487.095 million went to , and the most expensive block D (3700-3800 MHz) for PLN 496.837 million was auctioned by T-Mobile. The auction winners are to receive them this year – probably in December. In total, the state budget will receive over PLN 1.9 billion.
“Almost 3 years of waiting for the auction and finally the target frequencies for the 5G network have reached the operators. We have auctioned block C. Now we are waiting for further, huge investments to provide you with the best possible 5G as soon as possible,” Wojciech JabczyÅ„ski, Orange spokesman, said on the X platform Poland. The auction is intended to “eliminate white spots on the Internet” on the map.
The development of 5G frequencies awaits us
Jacek Oko, president of the Office of Electronic Communications, explained during the ended auction how the landscape of the Polish telecommunications market will now change. “For operators, this resource is primarily a guarantee of stable development over the next few years and a tool to effectively meet the growing traffic generated by customers. Thanks to its unique features, 5G is also an opportunity to implement new services and generate new streams,” it was noted.
In turn, the first effect of these decisions visible to customers will be “a communication race with a real 5G range that is larger than the competition.” This will translate into improved coverage and data transmission in the longer term. The President of UKE also said that the Office is now working on announcing a tender for the 700 MHz band.
5G means faster mobile internet
5G is the fifth generation of the mobile network. Thanks to it, data transfer and, consequently, the speed of mobile Internet will be significantly increased. Compared to the 4G network, it is less reliable. Although no studies have shown it to be harmful to humans, its introduction is associated with considerable criticism and concerns from some people and groups (more on this topic in the video below). In Poland, it has still not had time to achieve its full potential – primarily due to the lack of dedicated 5G frequencies and the prolonged UKE auction –
