The Palace of Versailles was evacuated on SaturdayAs before the Louvre in Paris, also as a result of a bomb threat, the day after a young Chechen Islamist murdered a teacher in a secondary school in Arras (north), local media reported.
The same sources indicated that the palace, located about 25 kilometers from Paris, will not reopen after the evacuation, which affected thousands of tourists.
The bomb alarm came from an anonymous message on a website, so far unidentified. Authorities have not reported any possible incidents during the evacuation.
An emblematic monument of the 17th century, the Palace of Versailles receives approximately seven million people annually, a figure that makes this architectural complex one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world.
A few hours earlier, the Louvre, listed as the most visited museum in the world, was evacuated.
Both evacuations come a day after young Chechen man Mohamed M. stabbed to death high school teacher Dominique Bernard, 57, at the Gambetta high school in Arras (north) on Friday.
Amid the commotion over this new Islamic attack, the French presidency reported this Saturday that up to 7,000 soldiers from the operation “Sentinel” will be deployed throughout French territory until this Monday in response to the raising of the terrorist alert.
Since 2012, jihadist attacks in France have killed 272 people and injured 1,200, mainly in 2015 and 2016. (JO)
