The Israeli government declared war on Palestine and attacks between the two have not stopped since then.

But what is the origin of the conflict between Israel and Palestine?

Although conflict in this part of the Middle East dates back hundreds of years, the beginning of the modern dispute was in 1947when Israel emerged as a state and was recognized by the Organization of the United Nations (UN).

What happened is that the region was divided in two to accommodate the citizens of Israel, the only Jewish state in the world. They obtained 54% of the territory, while the Arabs received the smallest percentage of land.

An important point of the dispute was Jerusalem, a holy city for Christians, Muslims and Jews alike. In 1947, the UN determined that Jerusalem would not be divided, and that the entity would retain its rule for ten years.

However, that plan failed and a year later the Arab-Israeli warin which Jerusalem was divided under Jewish control on one side and Jordan on the other. Israel also gained control of 77% of the territory..

During this war, The Arab population had to flee the land that Israel disputed. UN figures state that between 700,000 and 750,000 Palestinians were displaced and refugees in neighboring countries.

In 1950, Israel adopted Jerusalem as its capital because it already controlled much of its territory. And in 1967 the War of the Six Days, forcing about half a million Arabs to flee their homes again. Israel, on the other hand, has succeeded in occupying Gaza and the West Bank.

The current panorama of the war between Israel and Palestine

Since Hamas militias took control of the Gaza Strip in 2006, the two sides have clashed numerous times.

Currently, Israel and Egypt retain control of the strip to prevent the advance of Hamas, but as a result that area has become one of the poorest in the Middle East.

The Gaza Strip remains under surveillance and is only opened on certain occasions, leaving the population locked down and at the mercy of Israeli decisions.

After the recent Hamas attacks Israel announced that it would cut off all supplies of water, food and electricity for the population in the Gaza Strip. In addition, it is continuously carrying out bombardments and preparing for a military operation in the area.

In response, the Islamic group Hamas threatened to ‘publicly’ execute Israeli civilian hostages if Israel continues indiscriminate bombing of the Gaza Strip without warning its residents. (JO)
