Elon Musk introduced paid subscriptions to Twitter (this took place before changing the name of the website to X) in November 2023. Premium version users received an account verification badge, as well as the ability to create longer entries (in June, the character limit was increased to 25,000 characters!), edit them later, and even earn money from the content they create.
X with a new feature. Answers only for paying users?
There are many indications that X Premium (which is now the name of the former Twitter Blue) will become even more important in the near future. At the same time as offering new functions to paying users, the website is trying to make life more and more difficult for those who do not intend to buy a subscription.
A good example here is the latest feature that Elon Musk’s platform introduced on Monday. Users can now limit the ability to reply to posts only to accounts that have a verification badge. If a given user decides to enable this function for their entry, people without an X Premium subscription will only be able to view the entry – without the ability to comment on it.
To be fair, it is worth noting that this solution has its advantages. It is no secret that X is still flooded with fake accounts that publish mainly spam and fake news. There is also no shortage of ordinary trolls whose sole purpose is to insult other users.
So disabling comments for unverified accounts may go some way to sifting the wheat from the chaff. It’s a pity that it will also backfire on regular users, whose only sin is the fact that they don’t want or can’t pay $8 a month for X Premium.
Another fact is surprising. For now, the function of blocking comments from unverified accounts is available to all users – including those without a Premium subscription. However, it seems that this is an oversight and a “mistake” that will be quickly corrected by Elon Musk’s team.
It is worth recalling that already in March this year, only entries from verified accounts may qualify for recommendations in the “For you” section. This is the default view of the latest content on X. It contains entries served by the platform’s algorithms based on our interests, the accounts we follow and the interactions we enter into.
Elon Musk divides and rules on X
Elon Musk took over Twitter in October 2022. In this short time, the controversial billionaire managed to cause several minor and major scandals related to the platform. He began his reign in the company by dismissing half of the employees. Then he introduced a new way of verifying accounts, which caused a tsunami of fake news on the platform.
In the meantime, the new owner wrote an e-mail to employees (those he had not laid off before) giving them a choice: dedicate themselves to the new, “hardcore” Twitter or accept severance pay and leave.
Only exceptional performance will earn you a grade to advance
Musk said in an email. He also said that the new Twitter will be run mainly by engineers.
At the end of July this year. Musk has officially changed Twitter’s logo and name. From that moment on, the website was called X, and the characteristic logo of a blue bird was replaced by the capital letter X.
