“It Takes Two”, developed by the Swedish studio Hazelight Studios and distributed by Electronic Arts, won the Best Video Game of the Year award this Thursday at the Game Awards gala held in Los Angeles (United States). The title, devised by the Lebanese-born Swedish filmmaker Josef Fares, prevailed over the rest of the games competing for the highest award: “Metroid Dread”, “Deathloop”, “Psychonauts 2”, “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” y “Resident Evil Village“.
After a virtual edition for the pandemic, the ceremony, informally known as the Oscars of video games, returned on Thursday night to its face-to-face format at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Among the guests were actors Jim Carrey and Keanu Reeves, the latter in full promotion of the film “The Matrix Resurrection”, “We are reaching a point where the line between the virtual world and the treasury is increasingly blurred,” he said after announcing the launch of the video game “The Matrix Awakens.”
In addition to the awards, the gala is one of the most important events in the video game industry since the developers take the opportunity to advance their next releases. As for the rest of the awards, “It Takes Two” won two more awards: Best Multiplayer Game and Best Family Game. The title of Best Mobile / Cellular Game went to “Genshin Impact”, which prevailed over other mobile market hits such as “League of Legends: Wild Rift”, “MARVEL Future Revolution”, “Pokémon Unite” and “Fantasian”.
“Returnal” took the award for Best Action Game; “Metroid Dread” did the same in the Best Adventure Game category., “Guilty Gear -Strive-” won for Best Fighting Game and “Tales of Arise” for Best Role Playing Game. Additionally, “Deathloop”, developed by Arkane Studios, won the statuette for Best Game Direction and Eidos Montreal’s “Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy” won the title for Best Narrative.
In the Best Sports or Racing Game section, “Forza Horizon 5” won and in the Best Independent Game section, “Kena: Bridge of Spirits” won. The Game Awards also gave an award to the best content creator (“youtuber” or “streamer”), which went to the American Dream, in a category in which the Spanish Ibai and TheGrefg were nominated, the Brazilian Gauler and the American Fuslie. Finally, in the section dedicated to Esports, the Ukrainians Natus Vincere prevailed as the Best Team and “League of Legends” as the Best Game in this discipline.
