Despite numerous appeals from the police, citizens still fall for the tricks of fraudsters. They, in turn, invent new methods to extort money. One of them is now the “nuclear power plant” method. A resident of Kęty lost PLN 12,000. PLN.

On Monday, a 67-year-old resident of Kęty reported to the Police Station – we read in . As it turned out, the woman was a victim of fraudsters. While browsing the Internet, the 67-year-old came across an advertisement for a company that invested in modern, ecological technologies. After entering the link, you had to enter the phone number that the consultants could call, which the woman did. Then, after several minutes, the “consultant” called her.

The fake consultant presented an offer to invest in shares of a nuclear power plant, promising quick and easy earnings. According to the statement, the man was said to be very self-confident and use professional nomenclature, which helped him gain the trust of the older woman. He persuaded her to install a special application on her mobile phone that would enable her to track the profits from her investments.

In fact, it was an application that allowed remote access to the phone and the applications installed on it, including banking ones. The woman, as suggested by the interlocutor, installed the said application, and the fraudsters gained access to her smartphone and thus cleared the 67-year-old’s account. A resident of Kęty lost PLN 12,000. PLN, but the total amount of its losses could have been much higher. The fraudsters tried to take out a loan of PLN 20,000 for the 67-year-old. PLN, but then the bank blocked the account.

The police appeal for caution and to follow the following recommendations:

  • you should check whether the investment company is on the Polish Financial Supervision Authority’s warning list – link: https://www.knf.gov.pl/dla_konsumenta/ostrzezenie_publiczne;
  • you should not share your login details in electronic and mobile banking with anyone, e.g. using the following programs: TeamViewer, AnyDesk, Quick Support;
  • you should not share confidential data regarding your payment cards;
  • you should not send scans of your ID card;
  • you should not install additional software on devices from which you log in to online banking.
