The US military announced on Monday evening that the remains of an F-35 Lightning II fighter plane have been found in South Carolina, a day after the Marine Corps lost track of him when the pilot ejected from a parachute.
Joint Base Charleston said in a statement that searchers looking for the missing fighter jet had located the wreckage in Williamsburg County, north of Charleston. A U.S. Marine Corps spokesperson later confirmed it came from the plane.details of the New York Times.
“Community members should avoid the area while the recovery team secures the debris field,” the statement said. It added that Joint Base Charleston transferred command of the incident to the Marine Corps “as they begin the recovery process.”
The discovery came after a number of government and civilian agencies searched for more than 24 hours for the missing F-35. Joint Base Charleston even made an unusual request for help, posting a phone number the public could call with information about the missing plane.
The F-35 Lightning II is a highly coveted aircraft, especially by Ukrainebecause its shape and characteristics prevent it from being detected by radar.
The pilot of the plane in question ejected for unknown reasons over a North Charleston neighborhood, causing the device to fly in a ‘zombie state’, i.e. on autopilot.
JBC spokesperson Jeremy Huggins told the WashingtonPost that the transponder (device that transmits signals) on the plane was not working, making it difficult to track. (JO)
