It is possible that a river suddenly bursts out of its channel and ‘washes’ the area where you live, or that the level rises so much that your community is flooded… but you want to go outside and you are unable to because a flow of red wine water prevents this is indeed unusual.

It happened: a river with purple water, with a real smell of red wine, surprised the residents of Anadia, a city in Portugal, located in the Aveiro district.

The images of the impressive stream flowing through some streets, where there are even parked cars, quickly took over social networks.

“Drinking red wine is good for your health”, myth or reality?

What happened to that red wine river?

According to El Periódico, “Thousands of liters of this drink completely flooded the streets of the Portuguese municipality, following the double rupture of two tanks at the Levira Distillery, a nearby winery.”

The hard work fell on several people in the city. First, to the volunteer firefighters of Anadia.

“The authorities prevented the millions of liters from reaching the local river, the Cértima,” the EFE agency said as it confirmed what happened last Sunday.

“We pump the wine and transfer it to a wastewater treatment plant,” sources explained to the Spanish agency on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

The unusual river of wine also warranted clean-up days on public roads, she added.

The distillery is liable for damage

Firefighters indicated that this water entered some homes. This was unavoidable due to the strong current.

Meanwhile, the winery has issued a statement accepting the damage caused by this safety error, El Periódico reported.

According to the Spanish agency, the distillery “asked neighbors to inform them of the damage to their private property and to send photos, in order to cover the damage.”

In 20 minutes, El Periódico said, they reported that the river of wine was “impacting the air breathed in the Portuguese city,” so classes were suspended for three days, they indicated.
