In recent weeks, complaints have increased from users of the WhatsApp messaging application about receiving calls from unknown numbers that match other countries.

Through social networks, users have expressed their surprise at this situation and have warned the authorities that it is a scam.

With the passage of time, criminals have started looking for alternatives to be able to attract more victims and extort them or fall into stories of relatives in need of financial help.

Steps to mute calls from unknown numbers on WhatsApp

One of the newest techniques used is called Wangiri, a Japanese name meaning call and cuts. It involves calling a number and then disconnecting the call before they pick up. This will cause a call to be missed, tempting you to call back.

These are international numbers that forward calls to a premium number for which you will be charged.

One of the signals to identify this type of scam is the one that comes from an international number, made at night or during working hours to avoid answers, and rings only once.

Computer engineer Alejandro Varas revealed another kind of extortion that takes place through the WhatsApp messaging application.

The specialist indicated that video calls are made via WhatsApp with numbers from India, Pakistan and South Africa, among others. This with the aim of making a screenshot of the faces that can be used for fraud.

It has also been reported that a friendly conversation is conducted through video calls and is changed to pornographic images in the middle and the person’s reaction is recorded. After this, the extortion begins and payment of a sum of money is demanded not to make the video public.

Therefore, it is recommended to block or silence calls, and not answer unknown numbers, especially those from abroad. (JO)
