Prisoner Daniel Abed Khalife, who escaped from Wandsworth Prison where he was being held awaiting trial on Wednesday, has been branded a witty person by British authorities.

Khalife, 21, is charged with terrorism and suspected of spying for Iran between January and August 2021 at a Royal Air Force base in Strafford.

Khalife is suspected of collecting information “on a person who was or was a member” of the British Army “suspected of serving a person who commits or is preparing to commit an act of terrorism” in August 2021.

He is also charged with a false bomb alarm, because on January 2 he “placed an object with the intent to make someone else believe that that object could explode”.

Khalife’s escape occurred at 7:30 am on Wednesday when he dressed as a cook and climbed under a van.

Attorney General Alex Chalk explained that “straps were found” under the van, “suggesting that Daniel Khalife could have clung to the other part of the vehicle to flee.”

As a result of the situation, the security of ports and airports was strengthened and investigations into the security level of the 19th century prison were also announced.

Wandsworth prison was already a protagonist in one of the country’s biggest escapes in 1965, that of Ronnie Biggs, a thief famous for attacking the Glasgow-London mail train.

On the BBC, Metropolitan Police Commander Dominic Murphy said they remain open about where the escapee can be found.

He also described him as ingenious when he was trained by the military and called for information to be provided if he saw him.

More than 150 researchers were deployed. (JO)
