“My Neighbor Totoro”, “Spirited Away”, “Howl’s Moving Castle”, “Princess Mononoke”, “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind”, “Tomb of the Fireflies” … There is no Hayao Miyazaki animation that would not be of interest not only to Japan fans. However, when Studio Ghibli closed down in 2014 due to the director’s retirement, everyone was convinced that this was the definitive end of an era in the history of animation.
But then came 2017. Miyazaki canceled his retirement and announced that he intends to create one last picture. It aroused great enthusiasm. After all, since 2013 we haven’t had a chance to see anything new from Miyazaki, and he himself is getting old. And here it is – the long-awaited “Boy and the Heron” received the first short trailer and the promise that it will be distributed in Poland.

Initially, “The Boy and the Heron” was to appear under a different title (“How do you live?”), but as you can see, it was decided to change it. This is not the only modification to the initial plans of Miyazaki and his team. It was rumored that the master’s last film would receive neither trailers nor an official payroll. decided that after so many years of work, no advertising is needed anymore, and the slogan “the latest film from Studio Ghibli” is enough lure for viewers.
“The Boy and the Heron” had its premiere in Japan, where it met with an extremely enthusiastic reception. The animation is partly based on the director’s own life and will explore the classic themes of Miyazaki’s more serious films – death, war, coming of age and a new beginning. There will be threads related to the mythology and beliefs of Japan, and all this is watered with sauce from the best world animation.
In Poland, the film will first be screened at the Young Horizons Festival – “Boy and Heron” is the opening film. It is also expected to be widely distributed in December. And let’s face it, it’s a surefire candidate for the Oscar shortlist.
