The Register: Microsoft patents 360-degree folding smartphone

A patent for a foldable smartphone by the American company Microsoft has been discovered on the Internet. This is reported by The Register.

The patent has been registered with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The design of the device resembles the Surface Duo phone previously released by Microsoft, but its display consists of one panel, not two.

The document also states that the new device is able to fold 360 degrees. According to the company’s engineers, the front panel has a complex design, thanks to which the flexible display is not deformed or damaged when folded.

The journalists of the publication noted that Microsoft was not the first company to patent a 360-degree folding display. Similar technologies were previously offered by Korean corporations Samsung and LG.

Microsoft’s first foldable smartphone, the Surface Duo, was released in 2019. In 2021, the company released the second generation of the device. The device was commercially available, but then it was discontinued.

Earlier, an insider under the nickname Tech_Reve said that the South Korean corporation Samsung intends to release a cheap folding smartphone. The device, codenamed Galaxy Z FE, will appear in mid-2024.
