Android Police: MediaTek will release a chip for AI-enabled smartphones

MediaTek has announced the release of a processor for smartphones with support for artificial intelligence (AI) and generative models. This is reported by the publication Android Police.

The company said that they will integrate support for the Llama 2 language model from Meta into new processors. (recognized as an extremist organization and banned in Russia). The chip is expected to appear in Android smartphones, tablets, smart home devices, and vehicles.

It is noted that the new technology will improve the computing power of the device. Also, a smartphone based on MediaTek processors will be able to access generative models without access to the Internet. The company noted that they expect the first devices based on new processors to appear by the end of 2023.

Android Police journalists noted that such a scheme for using the capabilities of neural networks implies smoother operation of the device and better privacy. “A focus on privacy is a necessity in today’s Generative AI environment, and on-device processing with specially optimized hardware is a step in the right direction,” the media experts concluded.

In mid-June, it became known that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Infinix will release a device with a ChatGPT chat bot integrated into the OS. Apparently, the user will be able to send requests to the chatbot by voice or text.
