Strength of the heart: Boy sells his two chickens at auction to help his brother with liver cancer and raises $12,000

Love and empathy are the engines that keep the world moving, and once again they are reflected in an action – and lesson – that his own brother did for the health of a child.

Callen Purkapile, who wanted to help 4-year-old Cashton heal, found a way to contribute money for treatment and the amount he raised is far greater than anyone in his family could have imagined.

Cashton “was diagnosed with a six-inch-diameter (15.2 centimeters) tumor in his liver.” Unfortunately, it has spread and his lungs are affected.

According to Chapin TV, in mid-June 2023, the family “received the news that Cashton had stage four hepatoblastoma of the liver.”

Hepatoblastoma is the most common type of liver cancer in children, according to the National Cancer Institute.

chicken auction

The Purkapiles live in Wisconsin, United States, specifically Rock County.

To raise money, 9-year-old Callen expressed a desire to sell two chickens he owned.

According to Chapin TV, accompanied by a relative, he took the pair of chickens to a fair to auction them off.

They made a timid calculation and thought they could raise $2,000, but the solidarity grew and when they learned why that kid was selling his chickens, the fairground attendees contributed until they first reached $6,000 and finally raised $12,000.

Cashton’s health

In addition to Callen, little Cashton has another brother, six-year-old Colton.

On a GoFundMe page about Katie Brown and Matt Purkapile’s second child, Cashton is said to be a restless nature explorer, who enjoys riding his ATV and tending to plants.

A month ago, two aunts who made the page said their cousin had “bravely started his first round of chemotherapy, but the road ahead is still long. The treatment plan consists of three rounds of chemotherapy, with each round lasting three weeks. Cashton will need to be hospitalized two days a week, making this intense treatment a total of nine weeks.”

Univisión Noticias reported last week that the child has responded positively to the treatment.

“We ask for your love, hope and prayers,” Cashton’s aunts Callen and Colton posted.

Cashton fights with unwavering determination.

Commenting on the GoFundMe page, Pam Cavitt said, “I really love this family and I’m praying hard for a miracle.”

“Prayers for all of you,” Bill and LuAnn sent Pauli.

Best wishes to Callen, for his great idea to auction the chickens, are also being conveyed by social media users. This child, at his age, understood the power of the phrase discussed by El Mundo: “A brother is more than a friend, he is half of our heart.” Cheers to Cashton. God bless Callen… this is the true power of the heart.
