The painter, who had not had an individual face-to-face exhibition since 2015 following a heart attack, is one of the founders of La Artefactoría, an artistic collective that promoted contemporary art in the city of Guayaquil between 1982 and 1989.
“My parents saw my interest in drawing and painting and enrolled me in various classes and workshops. When I entered the Colegio de Bellas Artes Juan José Plaza, it really was the beginning of everything. I ran into a group of classmates who later became and remain colleagues. This meeting led to the beginning of my career as an artist, we formed a group and started working together,” he confesses.
Under the curatorship of Rodolfo Kronfle Chambers, 20 works were exhibited, three large pieces painted in oils and edited as caricature covers, using solid colors, and 17 pseudo covers, with an aesthetic closer to comics, made with Chinese ink. . This series of works was carried out shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic and continued during the quarantine. The painter says that he used oil paint on canvas and hard surfaces.

“Although the visual impact of this new solo show by Jorge Velarde is striking and atypical in the great context of his exhibitions, it does not deviate from the autobiographical route that has been at the heart of his work, nor from his desire to explore the imagination . that they shaped him as an individual and an artist,” says Kronfle.
Created from the experiences of the painter, the creations for this exhibition clearly speak of events that happened or situations that occurred to him, such as falls or fears that he felt at a certain moment, others were inspired by the constant search for his own identity . Velarde says it’s self-portraits that speak of him, and also includes resources such as humor and the use of retro language that worked head-on.
