Founded in 1991 by Paweł Marchewka, Techland will be taken over by the Chinese technology giant. The Tencent conglomerate, which is one of the most valued companies in the world, is to buy shares in Techland, becoming its majority shareholder, the Polish company announced.
Polish Techland will go into the hands of the Chinese giant. “Exciting News”
“I want to share with you something extremely exciting, which will open a new chapter in the history of Techland” – writes Paweł Marchewka, head of the Polish studio. “When I think about the future of Techland, I want to strive to get the best for our games, the team – and for you. And while I’m very proud of what we’ve achieved as an independent studio, I think the best is yet to come.” As Marchewka explains, cooperation with Tencent is to bring completely new opportunities that will allow Techland to “push into the highest gear when it comes to implementing the vision of games”. He adds that the dream and goal is to make Dying Light “the ultimate zombie adventure for gamers around the world.” Techland believes that many of the visions cannot be realized without larger partners. “We realized that the biggest, boldest dreams can become a reality only in cooperation with soul mates and strong partners who have a common idea, passion and readiness to support them with their knowledge, experience and skills” – Marchewka writes in the letter.
Techland only informed that the partner in question turned out to be Tencent, and that it would take over most of the shares of the Polish studio. How much against? This has not been specified. However, as Tencent noted in the notification to the Austrian Federal Competition Authority, it declared the acquisition of 67 percent. shares in Techland through its company Proxima Beta Europe.
The Wrocław-based company points out that under the agreement with the Chinese giant, Techland will retain full ownership of its titles, maintain artistic and creative freedom and will be able to operate in a way that it deems appropriate. The team of the Polish company does not change either, and Paweł Marchewka will continue to act as general director. “We have chosen an ally who has already had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s best gaming companies and who has helped them reach new heights – while respecting their methods of operation,” explains Marchewka in the final part of the letter.
