A tourist of Honduran-Spanish nationality who traveled to Peru to see Machu Picchu disappear at the end of September 2022 in that country. She had arrived in that country with her boyfriend.

Karla Godoy and Peruvian Jorge Alfredo Garay arrived from London on September 13. Peruvian media identify the couple as Jorge Alfredo Minaya Garay and Karla Xiomara Zelaya Godoy.

Before the disappearance, it was Karla’s brother who reported it, making Garay the prime suspect.

In El Comercio they reported that Garay had traveled to Chile on October 1 last year, where he had bought a ticket to London. During the journey he stopped in Brazil and arrived in Europe on October 4.

Eleven days later it was learned that they had found the woman’s body buried in a house, which the Daily Mail said belonged to Jorge’s grandmother; although the aforementioned Peruvian outlet pointed out that it belonged to Garay himself.

the hard confession

Jorge, 46, “strangled Karla, 37, with an elastic rope” and then buried her in a “makeshift grave” in the garden of her grandmother’s house.

On Monday 17th July 2023, ten months after the crime, George was “found guilty of murder at a landmark domestic violence trial at Maidstone Crown Court in Kent.”

The court itself – according to British media – “heard Jorge, who worked with Karla Godoy’s mother in Dartford, Kent, weep as he confessed the facts to his victim’s brother, Eric Godoy, in a partially taped phone call on 12 October”.

The couple had argued and in an initial statement, the man said he acted “in self-defense” and went so far as to confirm that the woman had a knife.

The court, according to what was reported in the Daily Mail, “heard Garay wrap a bungee cord around Karla Godoy’s neck twice before applying pressure from behind to suffocate.”

Authorities said at the time that the perpetrator wrapped the girlfriend’s body “in a plastic sheet before making the four-mile journey to her grandmother’s house on the outskirts of Lima.”

The painful and important call

El Comercio published in October 2022 that “Erick Zelaya, brother of the victim, got Jorge Minaya Garay to reveal where he had buried his sister’s body.”

That medium and Peru 21 pointed out that an audio broadcast by Buenos Días Peru could be heard of the conversation between the two men.

Karla’s brother: “Please tell me where he is so I can find his body. Tell me where is he?”

-Jorge: “I have now called the police and I have told them that I have put it in such a place, in a place where my grandmother lives. My grandmother lives there on a piece of land, I put it there. I feel horrible. I’m sorry for everything that happened. I don’t know, I don’t know what happened. I have no face to see anyone.”

According to the British newspaper, Jorge said via a police statement: “Something crazy has taken over me. I grabbed it with the elastic/rope. She was still kicking me, telling me to let her go, calling me names.”

“I yelled: Shut up, shut up. I was angry… I can’t remember what happened at that moment, not exactly. I know he was mad because she tried to kill me.”

Jorge, controller with the girlfriend

During the trial, prosecutor Philip Bennetts told the jury, “There is no doubt that this defendant murdered his partner at the time, Karla Godoy.”

To the jury, the defendant was described as an “intimidating, controlling and jealous man”.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, “one of the factors that made him jealous was when Karla went to see her daughter who lived with her ex-partner.” Karla was due to travel on September 23 to see her daughter.

My sister was a very optimistic God-fearing woman and she accomplished everything she set out to do.

Danira Zelaya to Peruvian media

Jorge, according to the Daily Mail, “lied to his own mother when he asked where his fiancee was.” He replied that Karla “got on a plane and went on a journey”.

The man returned to London, where he was detained two weeks later.

Last year, the woman’s brother thanked those who helped him find Karla so he could apprehend this “beast,” Infobae reported. At that point, the possibility arose that “He (Jorge Garay) didn’t do it alone.”
