European Council bans smartphones without removable batteries from 2027
After 2027, smartphones without a removable battery should disappear from the European market. This is reported by the publication Android Authority.
The European Council has completed the procedure for the adoption of regulations relating to smartphones. Its participants passed a law obliging device manufacturers to produce devices with a removable battery. The sale of devices that do not have a removable battery will be banned in the European Union (EU) from 2027.
According to European officials, in this way it will be possible to reduce the amount of waste and increase the efficiency of e-waste recycling. The document on the website of the European Council says that the ultimate goal of the law is to achieve the production of smartphones from recyclable materials.
According to journalists of the publication, the law will seriously affect the smartphone market – it is obvious that Samsung, Apple and other companies will change the design of their devices. Experts noted that, despite the fact that the law will be valid only in the European Union, IT corporations will not produce gadgets designed separately for Europe and separately for the rest of the world.
Insiders talked about the development of a bill banning the sale of smartphones without removable batteries in the EU at the end of 2022. Phones with replaceable batteries were common at the beginning of the 21st century.
