An auction took place in Uruguay at the end of June in which the main attraction was a letter written by a passenger of Uruguayan nationality before the accident that caused the sinking of the Titanic ship in April 1912.
The event was organized by Zorrilla Auctions and took place between June 30 and July 1.
The letter was written by Ramón Artagaveytia, one of three Uruguayans who were on the ship. He just approached them on April 10, 1912 in Cherbourg and wrote this historic document to his brother Adolfo a day later.
In only 13 of the 90 dives, the imploded Titan reached the depths of the Titanic.
In it he explained everything he observed and the luxuries visible on the ship, such as that some rooms had carved wood and “green velvety satin sofas and chairs.” Everything is new and rich”.
He also tells him that when he entered the ship they took his bags and that he had an electric stove in the room because the nights were cold.
The letter was sent from the Irish city of Queenstown, the last stop of the ocean liner.
“Two pages with three handwritten pages, originally a sheet of paper, with a damp stain and a later handwritten note added by Adolfo Artagaveytia Gómez: ‘Last letter wrote my dear brother Ramón. Three days later, the Titanic sank by drowning. Accompanied by a photograph by Ramón Artagaveytia Gómez, printed on a French postal letter, with a handwritten inscription in Évian and dated August 31, 1909: ‘A letter and loving memory of my brother Adolfo. Ramón’”, according to the description of the property on the auction page.
The letter remained in the possession of Artagaveytia’s relatives for at least four generations, and because of the damage they caused, it was decided to auction it.
In accordance with The Uruguayan Observeran Ecuadorian collector got hold of the letter through a phone call and offered $12,000, which was the base price.
The Ecuadorian learned about the auction through an international chain.
