On Thursday morning, fires raged in parts of the recently renovated Tiffany & Co. building on Manhattan’s iconic Fifth Avenue.

According to a fire department spokesperson, FDNY firefighters arrived at the store, which is located directly next to Trump Tower, to fight the blaze, which started in an underground floor. The source is believed to be an electrical safe.

No one was seriously injured, but some employees were taken to hospital by ambulance. The fire started around 9:38 a.m., just as staff were preparing to open the store to customers.

Store clerks and chefs at the sixth-floor Blue Box Café were among those on the street watching the smoke from the windows.

Tiffany has not yet commented on the fire.

The building has recently reopened after a long and expensive renovation. Some experts estimate that the renovations cost half a billion dollars. Stars such as Katy Perry, Hailey Bieber and Blake Lively attended the grand reopening in April.

The store is located on a corner highly prized by Manhattan real estate people, sharing the block with Trump Tower. LVMH, the powerhouse of the European luxury brand, bought Tiffany in 2021 for $16 billion.

Bernard Arnault, president and owner of LVMH, did not confirm the figure earlier this year when interviewed about the opening. Part of the renovation was the addition of The Blue Box Café on the sixth floor.

The first floor is occupied by a spacious showroom and a shop. There are ten floors in total, half of which are open to the public. The flagship store opened in 1940, but became world famous 21 years later with Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
